The Vicent Lambert case, Euthanasia and Simone Weil’s Letter to Bernanos

The Paris Court of Appeal ruled that Vincent Lambert, a young quadriplegic, had food and hydration maintained and thereby prevented euthanasia.

The case that divided the family (parents and two brothers) in favor of life; wife and other brothers in favor of euthanasia, also divided France and all those who are against or in favor of this practice.

The issue of Vincent Lambert’s euthanasia is part of a broad culture of death or the discarding of the person.

We don’t know if the decision that keeps Lambert alive will be upheld, but we do know that justifications and encouragements to kill him will continue and can be extended.

Simone Weil, Jewish philosopher, in a letter to the Catholic writer Georges Bernanos at the beginning of the 20th century, sensed this modern culture of death and disposal of the less fortunate and the authorization to kill himself without guilt very well.

She wrote in an excerpt:

“I had the feeling, for me, that when the temporal and spiritual authorities placed a category of human beings outside of those whose life has a price, nothing more natural for man to kill. When it is known that it is possible to kill without risking punishment or accusation. , if he kills himself, or less if he smiles around those who kill.
